Really enjoyed reading this!

I got chickens a couple years ago and became totally obsessed with learning about them and how to care for them. I'm now sure it was because i wanted more beings to love and care for, because as soon as we got our foster (soon-to-be-adopted) son, i stopped obsessing over the chickens.

Also i would add that we let dogs in our house because the number of snuggles per hour decreases sharply if you have to go outside to get snuggles. And nobody wants that.

I love animals, but I love the sanctuary of my home and my wife and children more. I just cannot imagine the added chaos that a dog would bring to my life. Sadly, Kelly is allergic to cats. They're more my style socially (if not emotionally). I talk to the wild rabbits in my yard. I feed the cardinals through the long winter. I pet most dogs--the ones that don't look like they would eat me if they found my corpse on the side of the road. I can't bring myself to harm the squirrels and chipmunks who plunder my garden. I kill mice in my basement without much remorse. Don't eff with my house, food, or family I guess.

Great piece, Jon!
